The Past Where It Belongs

The Past Where It Belongs

I was parked outside of Lucky 7 Liquor & Gifts

Digging through the ashtray for change

Looking for a feeling that no longer exists

Like a loser looking for a vein

It was after midnight when it started to snow

I was frozen in the cold hands of time

My mind can take me places that I don’t want to go

And the truth can stretch into a lie

Right beneath the unforgiving sky

I can’t remember

But it seems like forever might have come & gone

I hate to make a short story long

My days might be numbered

Maybe I should consider what I’m waiting on

Let’s leave the past where it belongs

You can’t take it with you - You can’t leave it behind

But I can’t find a reason to stay

I told her I was leaving but she knows it’s a lie

I guess it doesn’t matter anyway

What goes on inside her head is anyone’s guess

And I don’t think that I want to know

She said “I’ll never get to heaven with you holding my feet”

So I decided that I’d let her go

She watched me fall into the lights below

I can’t remember

But it seems like forever might have come & gone

I hate to make a short story long

My days might be numbered

Maybe I should consider what I’m waiting on

Let’s leave the past where it belongs

I’m thinking that there must have been some kind of mistake

‘Cause I’m talking to myself like it’s you

You became a habit I don’t think I can break

And sometimes I wish it wasn’t true

I’m not sure what you’re expecting me to do

I can’t remember

But it seems like forever might have come & gone

I hate to make a short story long

My days might be numbered

Maybe I should consider what I’m waiting on

Let’s leave the past where it belongs
